Shifting Culture: This series stems from my interest in Anthropology and my fascination with boat hulls.  The boat hull is a magical element, designed to float by partially sinking into the water without tipping over. Fragile and tenuous amidst the the vast power of oceans, ships opened the world of exploration.  It was inevitable that as one culture found another so began a shift.

Lost City (Shifting Culture series)

Carved from a beautiful yellow limestone, "Lost City" is a look at disappearing cultures over time.  Using the reference to "lost" Mayan Cities these pyramids are looking for a new home.  The boat shape is taken from a container ship common in most major ports.  Lined up in a row, the Mayan pyramids become the passengers on this voyage.  The stone colour is sepia with hints of purple and lots of shell fragments upon closer inspection.

Proto Ark (Shifting Culture series)

As this planet cycles through extinctions, we can only hope there is still some blue-green algae left.  Blue-Green algae, being the first "culture", may be the one most important to save.  Inside this fossilized Ark is a layer of resin and green chalk.  Simple, yet elegant, this boat form has a solid presence to it.  The Manitoba Limestone is full of shell fragments upon closer inspection.

Echo Wave(Shifting Culture series)

Carved from warm, rich, redish-brown Spanish Alabaster, "Echo Wave" merges elements of whale and boat hull.  Barnacle-like texture contrasts with the smooth polished alabaster hull.  In the hull sits a small temple, with cultural references to the belly of a whale.

Nile Time (Shifting Culture series)

Four Egyptian pyramids emerge from the hull of a Chinese Junk, carved from Italian Marble.  Every Culture assigns symbolic importance to other cultures which shift based on perceptions and stereotypes.  History is a story and therefore in a constant fluid state of interpretation.  Cultures voyage in and out of states of reverence over the centuries.

Drifting (Shifting Culture series)

A playful exuberant container-ship proud of it's valued cargo.  With nowhere to go, this piece is content to drift.  Carved from Yellow-brown Limestone, one can see the bands of shells in the stone.

White Water (Shifting Culture series)

An interesting piece ... a Venetian boat riding up on it's oars.  Carved from a block of pure white marble this is an elegant piece with an exaggerated hull.
